MINNEAPOLIS — Two short years ago, Derrick Williams arrived at the University of Arizona as a little-known forward with low expectations.
Recruiting services left him off their top 100 list and nobody really knew where he fit in.
It turns out, he fits in in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves made Williams the second pick in the NBA draft Thursday night, capping an incredibly fast rise for the 6-foot-8 forward.
Williams didn't start concentrating on basketball until the 10th grade. But he was the Pac-10 freshman of the year in 2010 and the conference's player of the year as a sophomore to vault into the lottery discussion.
Williams says he remains motivated to keep proving people wrong, this time those who are saying this was a weak draft class with few impact players.
