As you'd expect from any highly-regarded high-school baller, forward Alex Poythress was excited to get a scholarship offer to play for Mike Krzyzewski's Duke Blue Devils.
So excited that he may have inadvertently ratted out the legendary Coach K to the NCAA cops.
Poythress told CBSSports.com that he'd received an offer from Duke on Tuesday, while in Orlando for an AAU competition. Problem is, coaches can't make offers to players from having any contact with players during such events.
According to Duke's compliance office, the call was made after Poythress' Georgia Stars team was eliminated from the tournament. They are seeking a clarification from the NCAA as to whether or not a call made to a recruit that wasn't actually participating in a tournament but was still on the road with his team would be considered a violation.
Ah, that's the sort of NCAA hair-splitting we know and love.
Even if Krzyzewski is found to be in the wrong, this would be a fairly minor infraction - a "secondary violation" in NCAA-speak. Penalties for such things could range from the loss of a day or two of on-campus recruiting time to the offer being rescinded.
