What is an Official Visit?

Definition: An "official" visit is a formal -- and tightly-regulated -- campus visit by a recruit.

Because the visit is "official," schools are allowed to pay for transportation and provide lodging and meals for recruits and his/her parents or chaperones, and may arrange special tours, meetings with players, etc.

Some schools have been known to put on a real show for major recruits, setting up lockers with a recruit's name or having the recruit's name flashed on the scoreboard at their arena, complete with cheerleaders, a PA announcer and full light show.

But because such visits are regulated by the NCAA, there are also strict rules to follow. Schools must follow NCAA regulations as to the mode of transportation offered, the meals and lodging provided, the duration of the stay... and just about every other detail.

Basketball recruits cannot make any official visits until after January 1 of their junior year in high school, and are limited to one official visit per institution and five official visits in total.

Examples:

"He's making an official visit to UCLA -- otherwise he wouldn't be able to afford the trip to California."
