Brian Shaw interviews with Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS — Former Lakers lead assistant Brian Shaw has interviewed with the Indiana Pacers, and he could be on the staff within a week.

Pacers president Larry Bird has called interim coach Frank Vogel the frontrunner for the head coaching position from the beginning of the search and has never wavered from that point of view. He said Tuesday that it would help Vogel to bring in a "top assistant."

Shaw was the lead assistant for the Lakers under Phil Jackson, but he was left without a job when Jackson retired and the Lakers hired former Cleveland coach Mike Brown.

"We brought Brian in and interviewed him, and Frank's been talking to him," Bird said. "Hopefully, next week, at the end of next week we can sort something out and hopefully get something done."

Vogel took over for Jim O'Brien at the middle of last season, went 20-18 to close the regular season and led the team to its first playoff berth since 2006. Bird has said Vogel deserves an opportunity to coach, and every element involved with the team views him favorably.

Shaw became the top assistant with the Lakers in 2004-05.
